THE WORKSHOPS
Life-writing involves ten 2-hour sessions of writing through the life story, past and future, in a highly specified manner. See our homepage for more on life writing. See the Testimonials for what those who have participated in the workshops have said.
TRAINING & CERTIFICATION
The training and certification program includes four levels (116 meeting hours + ~116 non-meeting hours ), and all four levels of training are required for certification as a life writing coach:
Level One involves ten 2-hour sessions in which trainees write through their own life story in a specific process.
Level Two involves one-to-one attention to the written narrative. The narrative is destroyed after final approval. Only the trainee will retain a copy.
Level Three involves two 2-hour sessions developing a theoretical foundation for the work.
Level Four involves 2 sessions of skills development, 2 sessions of institution focused program design and learning the workshop protocol, a flexible schedule for supervised fieldwork, and certification.
All sessions are followed by significant homework assignments. Writing is encouraged between sessions. Training is conducted through teleconferencing technology for those living outside the Ithaca area.
Certification is conferred when trainees have organized and completed one supervised series of life-writing workshops and justification for certification is approved by our board certification committee.
